Mountain Island Lake

Mountain Island Lake has long been a hidden jewel in Charlotte's crown. Many young professionals are moving here to partake in the lake lifestyle and still have the proximity to Charlotte and Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Within minutes, you’ll also find the internationally acclaimed US National Whitewater Center, Latta Plantation Nature Preserve and shopping at North Lake Mall.  Mountain Island Lake is the only lake within the city limits. It was built in 1924 by Duke Energy with the construction of Mountain Island Hydroelectric Station whose primary function was to provide drinking water for residents of Mecklenburg and Gaston Counties.  The lake has approximately 3,281 acres of surface area and 61 miles of shoreline and supports Riverbend Steam Station. Lakefront lots and homes are scarce due to the lake’s size and more organic development as was common in the late 1920’s. Lake homes can be found in many surrounding neighborhoods with access through Neck Road, Cowans Ford Waterfowl Refuge, Riverbend Access Area, Mountain Island Tailrace Fishing Area and Latta Plantation Park.  Mountain Island Lake neighborhoods include Harwood Landing, Mountain Point, Mt. Isle Harbor, Overlook, Preservation Pointe, Riverbend, Stonewater and The Polo Club at Mountain Island Lake.
